If I were to describe what CloudFlare does in a single phrase it would be that CloudFlare improves websites in the best ways possible. CloudFlare is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that boosts both speed and security for users. They use a proprietary technology that capitalizes on recent advances in hardware, web server technology, and network routing. The outcome is a CDN that is simple, affordable, and performs better than any previous CDN technology.
The Story of CloudFlare
In 2007 Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway, and Michelle Zatlyn, the founders of CloudFlare, were working on Project Honey Pot. This was a web based network that uses the software embedded in websites to collect information for the purpose of preventing spam, bulk mailing, and email frauds from being sent around internet. Soon there were over 100,000 web administrators and millions of websites sending data about spammers, hackers, and scam artists.
The knowledge they gained led to the creation of CloudFlare in 2009 with the goal of improving security across the internet. Originally the team just wanted to make sure that CloudFlare would run without slowing down page load times. Thats why the team was surprised when CloudFlare launched in March of 2010 to find that users were seeing 30 to 40 percent faster load times on their websites. The goal of CloudFlare was always to run at parity and by modifying CloudFlare’s operation on every line of code they found a way to make websites load faster. This is how CloudFlare, which was formed for security only, accidentally turned into a CDN.
Advantages of CloudFlare CDN
CDNs are deployed over large networks of servers and multiple data centers around the internet. CDN’s serve a large portion of all internet traffic today including downloads, applications, live media streaming, and social networks.
CloudFlare’s CDN operates out of 24 data centers around the world and automatically caches your static files at their edge nodes in order to store files closer to visitors. This is done while at the same time delivering dynamic content from your web server. Using a technology called Anycast CloudFlare can then route your visitors through the nearest data center. On average websites will load close to twice as fast regardless of where the visitor is located.
CloudFlare uses the data collected from websites within their enormous community to power a new type of security service. Threats are automatically detected through CloudFlare’s technology which immediately starts to block the attack for that particular website and the entire CloudFlare community. CloudFlare can protect your website from a range of attacks including but not limited to: cross site scripting, SQL injection, comment spam, DOS attacks, and email harvesting.
